BMI is the acronym of Body Mass Index which is used to measure obesity of a person.
BMI is calculated by dividing the body weight by the the square of the height of a person, as kg/m2.or lb/ft2.
As per the classification of World Health Organisation (WHO) a person with a BMI equal to or more than 25 is considered as overweight where as a person with a BMI of 30 or more is generally considered as obese. Complete classification is given below.
A BMI less than 18.5 is underweight
A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is normal weight
A BMI of 25.0–29.9 is overweight
A BMI of 30.0–34.9 is class I obesity
A BMI of 35.0-39.9 is class II obesity
A BMI of > 40.0 is class III obesity or severe / morbidly obese
